Purchasing Wood

I am considering purchasing some Mesquite and Pecan wood from Here but I want your advice. I think I see bark on the chunks in the picture and I am not sure if bark on the smoke wood is okay or not.
Is wood with bark on it okay to use in my smoker or will it effect the taste in a bad way?

Steve,

You might compare the price and shipping costs to driving to Burlingame and buying from Lazzari (http://www.lazzari.com/index.html ). I cook with lump, not wood, but I got three 40 lb bags of hardwood lump at $16.06 per bag. Good stuff, no cabinet shop cutoffs or junk, burns slow, not a lot of ash. It looks like they have 45 lb. bags of mesquite wood as well as other hard woods, but I didn’t see Pecan. They also have 5 lb. bags of smoke wood.

Good call Chuck. I was not aware Lazzari sold wood chunks I only knew about their lump coal. I can make the drive to Burlingame a few times a year to stock up. Thanks for the info.

You are welcome.

As well as hardwood and mesquite lump, Lazzari has hardwood in both logs and chunks in boxes and bags, and the 5 lb. bags of smoke wood. I just finished off my second to the last 40 lb bag of lump, all my maple and hickory smoke wood loading up the 22 for today’s (overnight) pork shoulder cook, so I’ll also have to make a run soon.

was at Lazzari's last week and again forgot to get some smoke wood. hate it when that happens. my neigbors always laugh when i haul 4 40 pound bags out of my car

Robert which vendor on e-bay have you used and what are your thoughts about the price & cost of shipping?
Thanks....Chris

Steve, there used to by a company down the road from me that made pork BBQ in sauce. I got to take a tour of the place . It was really fascinating to see these racks and racks of pork butt come rolling out of the smoker. Anyhow, I got to talk to one of the pit masters one day and he told me that they never use wood with the bark on it. So I asked what they did with it . He told me they just leave it and anybody could have it. So I started collecting the wood and using it. No problem with the taste of any of the food cooked over it. I, still to this day, use wood with bark on it.

Bark has NO NEGATIVE effect on the flavor. I know SOME bigwheels in BBQ who claim much of the flavor is there. As long as that bark is dry, and free from rot, you are cool!

i used to cabelas because it was $5 for shipping no matter how much wood I ordered. It looks like they don't carry the stuff any more.

The ebay seller looks like a great deal since it includes shipping.

Robert, I've been looking at this guys stuff for about a month now and just have not ordered yet.
Thanks for the input....Chris

I can second Robert's recommendation. I've bought apple, maple, cherry and walnut from him..fair deal, perfect sized chunks, good guy. He forgot to include some walnut in an order and sent me some gratis. Will order from him again.

WALNUT????? I have never tried it, but have always been told that walnut is very strong and somewhat bitter. Be careful with it. Have you used any?
