Propane torch question

I have read numerous messages about people using a propane torch to light briquettes.

I have a brass torch adaptor that screws right on to one of the blue propane cylinders.

It lights fine, but when I angle it downward, say to point it at my charcoal in the chimney, the flame goes out.

It's a bit comical, really!

Is mine faulty? Am I missing a clever trick? How does everyone else do it?

Sean, your in good company, I bought the same unit and whenever I turn it over it goes out. There's a unit with a hose that connect to the "tank" so the tank can remain upright while you put the flame on your coals.

Took me a few tries and a post here to figure it out.

They wont work with the tank upside down. You are feeding the torch liquid propane then, not gas. You need the hose adapter.

You can also us a MAPP gas torch (yellow cylinder). Since it is a gas it will work upside down. I believe it also burns hotter. The attachment for the cylinder has to be rated for MAPP use.

you need one with a regulator built in...benzomatic makes one with the autostart trigger..Ace has them
