Problem finding "ready to cook" ham?

Okay so I know spiral sliced hams are all the rage, but for smoking, the original "ready to cook" whole bone-in hams are the best. Last year around the holidays I even did 2 in the WSM.

Like some other posts, this is a really easy smoke with HUGE rewards. You cannot believe how this gets eaten up, especially with the mustard & whiskey glaze.

But here is the question. I can't find them this year! Kroger, Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, all have spiral sliced, or at best "semi-boneless" fully cooked hams. I cannot find a whole bone-in ham ready-to-cook or otherwise? Fairly big town here in Louisville, KY. What am I missing?

I can boneless fresh ham "roasts" (not cured) from the local farmers market, but it's not the same either.

Any ideas?

Try a wholesale store like BJ's, Costco or Sams, they normally carry them.

Or talk with the meat manager and see what he can do for you at one of your normally frequented stores.

Thanks. I did also check Sam's and Costco, only spiral sliced there too

Well, besides boneless fully cooked.

Good suggestion on talking to the meat manager.

Wish I had a good butcher close by, but those are across town for now.

Try a local meat market or meat processer. It is pretty unusual for a large super market not to have at least a few whole bone in hams this time of year.

i went to a local market specializing in mexican/asian foods. they were the only ones that had uncut hams. bought a shank and took it home. had to do it in the oven as we had a winter storm coming through christmas day. to my pleasant surprise it was an uncooked ham. i might go back and get another. so check yer small local markets. was cheap also.
