Probe Wire Mod Done....So Next Question???

I did the probe wire mod today using the threaded lamp rod as others here have done, worked great ;).

Now my question is both the pit and meat probe from my Mav. 732 fit through fine but should I leave them inside the kettle which sits covered when not in use and just store the actual 732??? Or should I pull the probes out when not in use??? The easiest way seems to me to just unplug the 732 and leave the wires with the Performer when stored. Or am I missing something ??? What say you the more experienced folks here??? Thanks as always for your thoughts.

I only have the probe mod done on my wsm, I remove probes after every cook so I can clean them. I dont see a reason why you would want to leave them in place, you have to remove the cooking grate any way to light the chimney and if you left there they would just be in the way, my 2 cents.

I remove probes and the body and store them inside the house. The probes are flimsy enough (my opinon) without leaving them in the weather. I say that because I've had to replace probes before.

I just cut slits in the mid section so the lid doesn't pinch the probes. That way I can easily remove the grate with probes still in food and attached to grate and get the lid back on to reduce temp spikes. I do what I have to do to the food (wrap with foil, etc) on a work table next to the cooker, then return the grate to the cooker with probes in the food and attached to the grate, sweep the wires into the slot, and get the lid on quickly.

Here you can see the probes and the slit in the lower left of the WSM. I cut similar slots in my kettle and mini wsm.

Thanks boys. Part of my problem was the piece of lamp rod I had was so long that the curved meat proble of the 732 was tough to push through. So I took out the threaded rod and cut it ddwon thereby making the curved probe easier to insert and remove. Soooo I will be taking your advice and storing the probes in a suitable location with the rest of the 732...cheers.

I have the same mod on my performer. Definitely don't leave probes outside. All the folks who have had problems with the mavericks seem to mention getting the probes wet.
