Pre 2009 WSM - heat shield?

I just got an older wsm18 from Nextdoor. It has the older shallow water bowl and it doesn’t have a heat shield under the body/attached to the legs. Do I need a heat shield or was this designed to not need it? Just looking to avoid damaging the patio.

Anything you think I should know? I’m graduating from my wsm14 and looking forward to the additional capacity.

Yea my 08 doesn't have one and no problems using on patio.
Put a mat or drip pan under it.

Yep, I'm with Timothy. An automotive drip pan and your good to go.
