Poppin My Cherry

Hey gang, I’ve been pining over a red Genesis for awhile, ever since a friend introduce to the gas grill scene. Now It’s safe to say I’ve contracted the virus... no no, not that one... I’ve got WEBERITIS.

Couple days ago I found a $60 gem, prime for a restoration. Includes SS grates, not pictured. There seems to be plenty of info on this forum tho haven’t dug that deep yet, however, before I start dismantling, I have a couple questions that I hope you pro’s can answer.

I can’t tell if previous owner painted the wood slates grey or if they’re OEM since they’re pine instead of a nicer grain oak or teal. Did they make a Genesis 2000 in Red with grey slats?

Should I keep these grey or covert to finished wood?

are we able to get OEM decals? Like for instance the “Tank Gauge”

When I strip/media blast the aluminum grill box, The inside does NOT receive black paint, correct?

Your guidance is greatly appreciated

Welcome! That’s a great foundation to start with! Since this grill is a keeper and not a flip, you might want to consider getting the firebox and lid sides blasted. There’s lots of blasters around SoCal.

I have the twin of your grill, including a serial number starting with EE. I finished it earlier this year. So ask away.

Templates for the serial number decal, tank safety decal and scale are available here:

Joel is a graphic designer and generously posted templates in that thread.

No, do not paint the inside of the firebox or lid sides.

Yes, weber did put out Genesis 1000-5000 grills with slats painted gray.

Should I keep these grey or covert to finished wood?
That is up to you, but I think finished wood is much nicer.

There are some people with the tank gauge stickers. But, I don't think there is a commercial source.

When I strip/media blast the aluminum grill box, The inside does NOT receive black paint, correct?
Correct, do not paint anything inside the grill.

Your guidance is greatly appreciated

Thanks gang! Really appreciate the info and suggestions

So, I’ve got another one for you.

I driving with my kids heading back from the beach In Oxnard California. As we drive under the freeway, I see a red top Genesis sitting alone in a clearing surrounded by tall grass next to the freeway. I freak out, make a couple Illegal maneuvers and make it into the area

As Im loading it on top of our Prius’s roof rack, I forget to keep the hood from flipping back and break the hinges. I secure it, gather the other scattered parts and were off. Get home, my wife is clearly upset and annoyed that this is where my time and money will be going for at least the next month

today I disassembled both grills and will be taking components to be sandblasted this week hopefully weld the hinges back on

can only own one grill (wife’s orders) do I restore this feral found freeway find, or sell for parts?

Most likely will be painting with high heat rustoleum, but were 90’s frames and other components powder coated?

Is the best option for parts from Weber, GrillParts.com or TVWBB members?

I’d like to purchase new SS nut and bolts, anyone have exact hardware list or diagram?

Porcelain or SS flavorizers?

I didn’t test before dismantling, how necessary is it to replace burners and crossovers? Can I just clean and use old ones?

any suggestions?

No comment on the above

You are going to need two new end caps to replace the broken ones. They are fairly easy to find, but you will also need to replace knobs, all the wood, grates, flavorizer bars and likely burners.

Most likely will be painting with high heat rustoleum, but were 90’s frames and other components powder coated?

I don't think the frames were powder coated, but it was definitely a better paint than regular rattle can paint. My thoughts are that it is best to leave as much of the original paint as possible and then prep the whole frame and paint it. I only use the high heat stuff around the fire box and use Rustoleum 2X on the rest. But you can use the high heat on the whole thing.

Is the best option for parts from Weber, GrillParts.com or TVWBB members?

I buy most of my parts on Amazon. There is a good sticky to help you with that. https://tvwbb.com/threads/weber-gas-grill-parts-source.76176/

I’d like to purchase new SS nut and bolts, anyone have exact hardware list or diagram?

They are basic bolts and nuts for the most part. I suggest you pull the bolts and nuts you want to replace and go to the HW store and match them up with SS equivalents. Most are 1/4"x20 of varying lengths.

Porcelain or SS flavorizers?

Stainless 16 gauge are recommended. But they will cost more and it is getting tough to find them for the older 13 bar grills (Genesis 1000-5000).

I didn’t test before dismantling, how necessary is it to replace burners and crossovers? Can I just clean and use old ones?

Yes. on flavorizer bars, if they don't have holes and the edges are not all raggedy, then they are good even if they look worse than a 1952 ford that has been sitting in a field for 50 years. As long as the burners are not cracked and don't have holes other than the designed burner holes, you should be able to clean up the burner holes and re-use them. Scrape the holes with a wire brush to clean them up and then clean out the junk inside the tubes before putting them back.

any suggestions?

I suggest you let your wife know you came down with an illness.....Not Covid, but Weberitis. Tell here there is no known cure but that you will be working on curbing the affects and symptoms.....and I would start by finding another source for your grills than the side of a busy freeway during rush hour.
