Polder Concern

I got a Polder dual-probe thermometer for Christmas. I've only used once or twice, and now it seems like I killed it already. One for one smoke, I had the probe inserted into a potato, and the cover of my WSM rested on the cable. Could this have damaged the probe? Was this the incorrect way to use it? I'm doing ribs now, and it keeps reading "LL" unless I play with the cable. Any advice or info is welcome.

it probably broke a wire in the lead. from what i understand folks that use digital therms use an eyelet type mod to pass the wire through the WSM.

How hot was the cooker? I don't think most probes are to be used over 400 degrees. Don't know what temp will cook one though.

by dual probe, do you mean that it reads internal temp and ambient temp? the probe has a barrel like tube at its base?

If so, I have gone through 4 of these. after the first one went I bought 3 replacement ones that are all toast. What I've found is that the probe is not sealed at the point where the wire enters the barrel. If moisture gets in there it shorts it out. sometimes they can be revived by baking them in the oven. or you might want to try and old trick for reviving a drowned cell phone: stick it in a box of uncooked rice.

Cover on cable probably didn't do anything as long as the lid isn't slammed on it.
Incorrect way? No, wouldn't say that. I've had two Polder single probe meat therms for a couple of years now and that's the way I've used them. Been fine so far. Does the therm come close to correctly measuring air temp?
