Polder Battery Question

Are there early signs of failing batteries for probe thermometer? I smoked a salmon fillet this weekend and the temp got stuck at 145 deg for a long time. I finally took the fillet off and it was done to my usual 170 deg finish.

Mine did that once too. I noticed some blue battery acid looking corrosion around the contact and kinda scraped it with my fingernail and put the battery back in and it works fine now.
