plastic bag melted to outside of my WSM

Made a huge faux pas and had a plastic shopping bag blow onto the outside of the bottom of my WSM, melting onto it instantly. Any advice for getting this off and restoring my WSM to its original condition?

Thanks,

Wow, that sucks. I would try goof off or acetone. Test the acetone in a small area first, I don't think it will hurt the finish but I would try it first. Always go with the less aggressive route.

Petrol, or gas as you call it dissolves plastic bags after a short period of exposure. I don't think acetone works nearly as efficient.

There are a number of "adhesive removal" products on the market that should work quite nicely. "Goof-off" is my product of choice. It will not harm the surface of the WSM and should remove all of the melted plastic with just some light rubbing. Make sure you follow the directions! I've used Goof-Off to remove paint bumper scrapes from a brand new car with no problem. I doubt it would harm the baked on enamel of a WSM. But.... I would first use a PLASTIC (repeat... PLASTIC) putty knife and scrape off as much of the melted bag as possible before using the adhesive removal product.

Good luck!

Most shopping bags are polyethylene - mineral spirits should soften the material.

Polyethylene is also very flammable - you might be able to use a propane torch and burn most of it off - and then use normal cleaning methods to remove the ash. Propane should not affect the porcelain finish.
