PLAN OF ATTACK

Hi all of my BBQ friends,

I'm in need of a little help planning a large cook request for a Saturday afternnon BBQ. I need to have it ready at 2pm. The mission is a whole butt and 3 racks of baby backs.

My plan of attack is as follows:
Prep my butt at 4pm on Friday to start my cook at 6pm. After 14 hours, at 8am on Saturday I'll transfer the butts to the bottom rack and add the ribs to the top area. They will have time for a 4 to 5 hour cook.

Would you guys do this any different?

Also- along with more coals, a nice size amount is needed when the ribs go on but do you think it will affect the butt that is 3/4 finished in a bad way or it will only make it better?

Hope everyone is having a great BBQ summer!!

Large cook? That's a typical Sunday brunch around here.

Don't know your planned methods or temps but the times aren't out of range.

Butts are bulletproof. You can't hurt 'em if you tried.

Yeah, everything rides on size of butt and planned cooktemps.

Back ribs I don't low/slow so would likely do the butt then ramp up the temp and do the ribs while the butt rests. But your plan should be fine depending on the variables noted. Adding the ribs late plus some fuel won't be an issue. If you are planning to add wood as well, for the ribs, then use less wood for the butt when you start.
