Placement of Temp probes

Santa brought a Maverick thermomter for xmas. My question is do you place the probes so that the cover of WSM sits on the probe wires. Also I do not have any table or shelf on my WSM, will the sending unit get damaged if hung on the WSM or does it need to be placed away fron the smoker.

You can run the wire(s) under the lid and you can hang the unit from the lip. I just dangle the smoker probe through the lid vent and don't bother with grate placement.

I run the wire under the lid and place my sending unit on the ground in a ziploc baggie. I keep the receiver with me in the house. I usually run the probe through a ball of foil on the top grate.
