Performer issue

Anyone else encounter this one, the rollers on the lid holder melt into the charcoal bowl? On the first cook after putting it together (this part was already put together) a few years back this happened. I went and removed it and along came the enamel off the bowl. Called Weber's Customer Service, of course they sent out a new bowl. It happened again, the one on the front is now melted into the bowl again. I'll use a dremel to carefully remove it. Strange, my Performer Platinum from 2005 still has those parts in perfect shape, I use them in the same manner?

I've removed my lid holder a long time ago. It seemed to just put the lid right where I didn't want it.
I'm going to be getting a lid hinge in the next few weeks.

George, I usually use my baskets, but the time that I noticed it I did have that left side with a good pile of K plus some Royal Oak for some steaks and burgers. I called Weber and they said that part is only covered for 2 years (grill is 3 now) but they'll make good on it anyway. Nice of them to do that, I didn't have a problem paying the 40 bucks for them as it appears to be something I'm doing wrong. I will modify them, perhaps some heat resistant washers will help. BTW, I got the roller off by heating (slowly in circular manner) the charcoal bowl with a torch until the plastic melted and the part detached. If this happens to you, don't simply pull it off because the enamel will come right off with it.

I got my performer off of Craigslist and the rollers were melted when I got it. I bought new rollers from eReplacements and when I installed them I added an extra washer in between the rollers and the bowl. This seemed to take care of the problem as I have had no issues with the rollers ever since. I still periodically check them during a hot cook just to make sure they're not starting to melt. Best of luck.

Claude;
My CL Performer was missing one of the plastic rollers when I got it. My wife, who is an expert Quilter and seamstress, just furnished me with a wooden thread spool that works perfectly. You surely know someone who sews. Take a good plastic one with you to show them and ask them to save the wooden rollers and keep a couple extra around.

I regularly use the bale side of the Performers when I do direct or indirect and, so far (knock on wood) have not had a problem. An insulated washer, as was mentioned, would be a good addition to your set up.

Keep on smokin',
