Performer: heavy smoking with all-natural briquettes & new propane supply

Hi,

A friend had heavy smoking on his stainless performer while using Royal Oak Chefs Select all-natural briquettes. The same briquettes had not caused smoking on previous uses.

Upon questioning he said there was a strong chemical smell and he had just re-filled the propane tank.

Was this caused by bad propane or wet briquettes. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I do not think it was the propane, esp since it was used just to light. Im guessing the coal...esp if it was damp. Ive had a funky bag of coal before. Did he only have one cook w/ this coal? Did he try another cook? Perhaps it was the food?
