Performer Gas Assist install question

Question - I was setting up my new performer tonight, and when installing the hose to the kettle, I had a question. I followed instructions and even looked up a video on Youtube, but can't figure out why it's okay that there is a gap in the steel tube where the gas would flow?

I've attached a picture of how it's set up. If I'm doing it wrong, please, by all means let me know. I figured the connector or "orifice" would have stuck further back into the steel tube closing up any gaps with outside air.

Thanks for your help!

nope, thats the way its supposed to be.
the force of the gas going in basically sucks in oxygen with it and mixes so it will work.
yer set to go !
by the way, you might want to loosely put some screen over that so spiders/critters don't climb into the opening.

Its called a venturi mixing valve. Mixes the fuel and air so that they have a combustible ratio. If you tried to light the pure gas it would not burn as it needs oxygen to burn.
