Pear wood for smoke?

Hello. I've been given some small apple branches which look good - except they still have their bark, which is fairly liberally covered in green lichen and moss. Does this need to be removed before smoking? Also, does the bark have to be removed?

A friend had got some bigger bits of apple split into fist sized pieces - which some rotter stole. So he is now offering to get me a bag of pear wood also split into pieces. Any opinions on pear wood as a smoke wood???

Andrew, I'm using pear wood this weekend on a turkey. I understand it's a little milder than other smoke woods

I agree with adam, I would remove anything that is not clean bark. As for pear - take all you can get. It's a great wood for smoking. It is on the mild side, similar to apple.
