EDIT: ended up going with the following after more reading and recomendations from members here:

  1. Rpi zero w
  2. heatermeter 4.2 TC combo (with free misprint case)
  3. microdamper/fan/servo
hopefully have everything by the weekend and soldered up if i have time.

I'll still have to pic up the following: TC pit probe (not sure if aligator or probe style?), TW probe (read my mav probes kinda suck, i was mistaken and actually have the ET-732 probes) and a PS (will look at running everything off my Ridgid brand drill 4aH batteries down the line).

Thanks again to everyone for helping me out!

new guy here, so glad i found this section of the forum. i've been wanting a very simple bbq controller that would send temps to my phone via wifi and give me a graph (im an engineer, we speak graphs!!) and i finally found it! i have been reading the wiki and reviewing threads all day. i have an 18.5 WSM and a primo XL. i actually swap SMD LEDs on tacomas and 4runners, so i am not scared of soldering. the coding has me a little worried, but i think i can fumble through it.

if you guys wouldnt mind, would you look over the following parts lists to ensure i got everything i need:

  1. raspberry pi zero W (http://www.microcenter.com/product/475267/zero_wireless_development_board)
  2. Heatermeter board only (https://store.heatermeter.com/products/heatermeter-v4-3-circuit-board-set-only)
  3. Microdamper/fan/servo (http://microdamper.bigcartel.com/product/microdamper-with-fan) (will hardwire)
  4. standard resistors, caps, etc from digikey (seems a few parts are not in stock at mouser at the moment)
  5. power supply
  6. probes (already have a few et-72 probes)

anything i am missing? again, going for extremely simply, no LCD, no buttons, no LEDs, etc. basically like @Steve_M's waterproof setup (minus the thermocouple)

thanks for any and all help. i'll throw up some pics when i get everything going.
