open or closed cover when grilling

For many years I've grilled steaks, burger, pork chops with the grill cover up. The idea is that when the cover is closed I am getting the oven effect. However somebody told me that Weber Grills are designed to create air flow or something to eliminate the oven effect when grilling with the cover closed. FWIW, I have a Summit.

What are your thoughts?

For direct grilling: If the meat is thicker than the palm of your hand, keep the lid closed. If the meat is thinner than the palm of your hand, keep it open. Raichlin's rule, not mine.
