Older model kettle

Hi all,
After been inspired by this page i have picked up an older model kettle from a selling site here in the UK for £30. I have always wanted to have a go with a lidded charcoal grill so as to compare it to my gasser for myself. It requires a good clean but looks in reasonable condition from what i can see . It has 3 vents on the bottom and 1 in the lid, a code AD is stamped on the top damper. There were no instructions with it and i was wondering if there were any basic rules to follow regarding setting up of the vent system regarding the various cooking methods a lidded kettle can offer. Any tips hints advice, do 's and dont's would be much appreciated , from reading the blog i undertand what great importance it is to master the fire and would like my first burn up to be a small victory as i think a steep learning curve is ahead of me and it would give me a bit of confidence . Many thanks in advance cheers Dave

David.
The AD code would suggest the lid is from 2010, but you say it has 3 vents on the bottom? Are they similar to the vent on the lid?
As far as I'm aware Weber stopped using the daisy-wheel bowl vents by 1999/2000. I might be wrong.
Are ther any letters stamped on the bowl vents?

The kettle is the easiest charcoal grill I've ever used. Generally, I leave the top vent open and the bottom vents about halfway closed once the charcoal is lit.

The nice thing about a kettle is that there are a lot of resources and recipes written for it, so it's easy to replicate other people's successes.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replys have just removed the 3 bottom vents to start cleaning and they are all stamped AD. The picture in Tims link is spot on so I assume its a Bar B kettle 2010, will commence with the big clean this week then have a go starting with the vent 1/2 closed as suggested by Marcus, thanks for the replys fellas cheers Dave

Thanks for the info Tim. That must be only available on mainland Europe.

Edit:

Nope, we can get the 22.5" here too. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3450839.htm

David. Nice score for £30 mate!

With regards to cooking methods. You can do a load of stuff with that kettle. For grilling, you can leave the lower vents wide open for high heat. You can have the lower vents just cracked open for low & slow. You'll need a thermometer to be able to monitor the pit temp, as it looks like it doesn't comes with one. They can be bought here. Or you could get yourself the Maverick-732 to be able to monitor the pit and food temps.

I'd think with three individual vents on the bottom, smoking on this would be nicer than on the one touch models. I'm kind of jealous.

Marcus, you are right in this. I have been thinking the same thing recently when dealing with the one-touch on my Performer. Might be kind of retro, but I wish they would bring back the individual vents. Maybe a bit more work for us, but much better control.
