OK I have a pork question....

My local grocery store Piggly Wiggly has what is called a pork picnic on sale.... My question is this like a Boston butt? I saw it is part of the shoulder, just curious if someone has smoked one.

Picnic is the lower portion of the shoulder. The butt is the upper part of the shoulder. The picnic will work just fine for making pulled pork.

We do our own butchering on the farm, and I never split the two.

Dumb question but will the smoking times be the same.... and thank you for your reply

Lee. The times will be similar for pulled pork. Picnic's I buy still have the rind on, so I usually treat them like a fresh ham (score the skin) and take them to 180'ish and slice.

Boy, we had a "ready-to-cook" smoked picnic (shank) for Easter and it was--without question--the best ham I've ever eaten. Chunked like overdone brisket. YUMMY

When people talk about whole shoulder: that is picnic and butt in one big piece. If you smoke it like a butt with the skin still on you can get skin bits mixed in the pork that is not very tasty. A friend of mine did this and we couldn't figure out for the longest time why we didn't like his pulled pork.
