Not sold on Stubbs (22.5 WSM)

Wow, I guess I'm very lucky with my 22. I have had no issues with burn time. I've gotten 16 - 18 hours out of 17 lbs and had plenty of charcoal left over, regardless if lump or briquet

I'm going through reviewing the past couple of years of posts about briquettes because I have some comments particularly about Royal Oak briquettes. But other than saying I prefer them to Kingsford (with Stubbs remaining my #1 briquette) I'll post the comments elsewhere in a newer thread.

About where to get the RO briquettes, another place in the South is Piggly Wiggly. A few months ago, I found double packs of 1lbs. selling for $4.99. Wish I had bought more, but I had never used them at that point and just did finally try them yesterday.

I prefer Stubbs but mostly use K because I haven't been able to find a decent sale on Stubbs. When I had my modded ECB, I HAD to use Stubbs because the ash from K would choke out the fire (not much room for ash in a Gourmet ECB). With my WSM, there's plenty of room for ash under the grate. The only difference I see between the two for long cooks is having to tap the legs when K starts losing heat because of ash buildup inside the ring.

I'm still amazed at how long charcoal will last in the 18.5 WSM. I haven't tested the upper time limits of one ring of Kingsford yet but was thrilled to get 17.5 hours of good, consistent temperature from a ring of Stubbs (+ 20 starter briquettes) without touching it. It's much closer to "set it and forget it" than I expected.

Yep, the 18" rocks.
