Hello guys and gals,

After a lot of research, including help from this site, I've decided to spend a chunk of my 2012 tax return on a WSM 18.5 and accessories. I ordered the smoker tonight, and have a list of accessories to buy in the coming days. I didn't want to buy everything in one lump sum, as I know my bank would freeze my debit card. I have a list of everything I would like to start this journey with, and would like to hear any advice/suggestions/feedback before my first cook. I have a great meat market in town. All of these products can be found on Amazon.

WSM 18.5 - Ordered

Maverick Wireless Thermometer set

Weber Chimney Starter

Bayou Classics Marinade Injector

"Bear Paws" Multi-tool - for pulling only, I understand you shouldn't pierce meat until cooked.

Folding Rib Racks

Weber Firestarter Cubes

BBQ Sauce Mop with removable head

Raichlen's Best of BBQ insulated gloves

2 books:

Low and Slow

Smokin' with Myron Mixon

Thanks for reading, I know I have a lot to learn from everybody. I am very excited, I've been watching BBQ Pimasters, WSM videos on youtube and most recently BBQ with Franklin on youtube. But really, I just want to make great food.

Thanks, Everyone

Kam :wsm:

Welcome aboard Kam!
I'll defer to others about your want list, and just say that the WSM and a chimney are the only things needed to get started.

Welcome , kam. I will second that. If you can squeeze in a decent meat thermometer , It doesn't hurt to have one.
Do some chicken , some pork shoulder.get used to how the WSM works (and it works good).
Have fun and enjoy the food you make. You will figure out as you go what the next doo-dads you need are.
Good luck , brother!

I will 3rd that Kam! Get to know your cooker inside and out first, then start adding to your collection
of toosl and gadgets. Most of all, enjoy it and have fun, that's what it is all about. Welcome aboard!

Hi Kam and welcome aboard!

I light my charcoal with a high output propane torch, it's easier than a chimney.
You will need heavy duty meat tongs and a pair of insulated gloves.
A meat thermometer is a good thing.
Other accessories you can buy along the way, as you need them.

I would do a Boston butt or pork picnic first, they are the easiest to cook.

Good luck!

Bob

Thanks everybody for the advice. I would like to clarify one thing, though: will I need another meat thermometer in addition to the maverick? I was under the impression it measures both meat temp and air temp inside the cooker.

Thanks guys, I will report back after seasoning and my first cook.

Check local library system ... I regularly check out various bbq grilling recipe books for new ideas... And use my printer to copy multiple pages or handwritten recipe cards

Maverick does both. I've found it invaluable. I'd be constantly outside checking the temp otherwise.
