New WSM 22 after initial placement of mods......

This has been a weird journey with my new wsm. At first I ordered this and decided that it was too big, still is, but just decided to keep it rather than returning it for a 18. Well, it was out of round so had to order some replacements, then other matters delayed it even further. I knew when I first saw this thing that wheels were going to be the first mod since I don't cook where it sleeps, in fact, all of my grills move before firing up. After seeing another WSM with the tri wheels, I knew that I wanted those. After reading the mod's on this site, I wanted handles on the middle sections so I put on black door handles with only one hole drilled, the other in the hinge strap. I decided I would rather them side to side rather than up and down as that made it harder to grip and easier to lift. Then, I bought a clay pot which measured 18.5 inches across that rests nicely on the hinge for the water pan, though I did add a few washers on the strap to make it fit tighter, I've cooked on other models with no water pan and will try it like this for now. As you can see, it is well foiled. I also bought an additional top grate to use as the lower grate rather than the smaller that comes with the wsm. It simply sits on top of the four lower screws on strap.

Then I wired the grate and charcoal bin together and added two handles to pick it up. Went to buy U-shaped handles, but could not find then long enough so went with the eye bolts, works great. First cook is in the next day or two with a turkey breast that will be sliced for sandwiches etc., as I'm so tired of buying those little smoked honey breast in the store for a billion dollars per pound.

All of these mods together took about an hour or so to do. As others have said, started with masking tape to drill the holes with 4-5 different bits working up from small to finally size. Slow and easy. I got down on my hands and knees to find the hit point on the legs so that I fastened the wheels to the exact bottom for a good even ride.

Few other projects to work on, but not a big hurry.

Hard to see the additional handles on each side as they are also black.

Nice job, David. Looks good! You said your first cook will be a turkey breast...you might as well do a bunch of them. The cooker is big enough, friends and family will want some, and you can freeze whatever is left over. You could easily do 6 bone-in breasts in the 22.5" WSM.

Have fun!

Yea, I could. However, on first cook, I think I will go easy, maybe a few chicken breast thrown in at first. It is also hurricane season here, and I don't load up the freezer during the next three months because of that. My friends can fend for themselves.. Depending on initial food stuffing, I do plan on freezing some after slicing for sandwiches, etc.......................d

What I failed to do in my opening post was to thank all for the idea's about mod's and use of this product and others. I don't think that I would have come up with the various mods and in fact, some future ones also. Hopefully, I can add something useful to this site one day.

Mods look great!! Did ya wash the cooking grates with dish soap and hot water.....the WSM doesn't need seasoning but another brother here on the forum had some tummy problems after his first cook. Don't know exactly what caused the rumbly in his tumbly so it wouldn't hurt to wash the cooking grates before the first fire up!!

The charcoal grate was very greasy but the cooking grates felt fine, but yea, I washed them anyway. One never knows who's had a hand on them.

@Earl, I saw those type of wheels on another wsm, and liked them too.............d
