New to the smoker world and site

Hello everyone, found this site from another site and have learned so much from the two of them. I love BBQ and purchased my Napoleon Prestige Pro grill last season. I have had great success with it and have learned so many great things..... but...... I got the smoke bug. My boss at work has a char-grill and he makes some of the finest BBQ that I have ever had. But I think that I can do better!!!!!

So my research started out finding a brother for my napoleon grill, and I found the Apollo which I really liked.

Then I went to several sites and google searches and found out about the WSMs. The reviews were all amazing and I read that the Napoleon was the same as the proQ and not made of the strong steel like the weber. I also found the doors to be too small.

So then I began reading as many reviews as I could and suggestions. I posted some help on another Q site and had an overwhelming amount of support. I was not able to post on here as I was not a confirmed member yet.

So the debate was between the 18 and the 22. It felt agonizing that I couldnt make a decision. The money was not an issue it was just practical vs. bigger is better for me.

After much debate I decided on the 22.

A friend runs the local shop and gave me a bit of a deal on a floor model, so I snapped it up without anymore thought. I am now the proud owner of my very first WSM 22.5. I am going to order a new door, and 3/8" eyelets for it from cajun bandit. They have a smoke ring in a kit that they say will be better?? still on the fence on that.

I was looking at an igrill and was persuaded to the maverick ET732. My friend had them for 69.99 and let it go for 40.00 so I figured what the hell.

I think that is it for now. I am leaving for vacation and when I get home I will do a test run before I try my first cook. I am going to do a brisket to start. I figure if I get that right then everything else should be good.

Here is a picture of where I placed it in my yard. I cant wait to get going

That looks like the perfect nook for some outstanding cooks! ;)
Your research has wisely led you in your purchase...you will not be disappointed.
Congratulations, and don't forget to post pics of your first brisket!!!

Even better, it looks like you've found yourself a nice wind break with your placement. :)

Looks like an awful long walk from the house to the cooker. You might be able to call your cooking exercise. Great idea. Where in Ontario are you?

Thanks so much. I live in Hamilton the arm pit of Ontario. But on the mountain lol.

We have spent a lot of time and energy finishing this yard and the smoker is the last piece lol!!!

My first cook is going to be a brisket. I need to find where the heck I can buy one from to start but I figure if I do that right then everything else is a cake walk.

I am so excited to get going but will need to wait a week for a family vacation.

Welcome Bosco! Your gonna love the 22 WSM. I purchased one a couple mos. ago and it produces some amazing BBQ. Just set it and forget it. Very ez and forgiving to operate.

You can get Royal Oak lump a lot of places. I get mine at Lowes and the Superstore usually carries it. If you plan on cooking through the winter stock up in the fall, it can be pretty slim pickings looking for charcoal after September.

Hey Bosco,

My lovely wife bought me the CB pimp kit that came with the door, the ring, the rotisierie, and the gromets. I'm not sure if the fire ring does anything special, I believe the ring was originaly designed to overcome an ash/vent build up issue from a few years ago that has now been corrected.

Clearly the big ticket item in the bundle is the Rotisierrie. If you want the the rotisierre, I'd recomend going for the full kit, as the door and gromets are excellent mods (just be careful when re-assembling the door handle). You'll save a few bucks if you bought all three seperate, and the ring gets thrown in for free. If your'e not afan of the rotisierrie, then I would pass on the kit and just consider the door and groments.

UPDATE: Looking over the individual prices, the Pimp Kit price is mis leading. at $199.00 they state you would save over $55 if you bought all the parts individually. That's only true if you bought the rotisiserriering and the rotisierre itself seperate. But if you bought the rotisieer kit, the door, and the gromets (that would be $179) and then toss in the ring, youre at $214.....so you save $15, eh, given the ring dsoens't add much, I'd recomend not buying the kit. just get the door, groments and rotis. kit.

You will able to produce some of the best BBQ out of a WSM for sure. I owned a Chargriller for many years before I got my WSM. It does what it needs to but it is super inefficient (even with modifications) and because of this it needs to be babysat for entire smokes. I could never let it be for more than about 4 hours with out having to do something.
With a little practice you should have no problem getting 10 hours plus out of a smoke session with a WSM.
Oh and absolutely beautiful yard and set up !!!!

Welcome Bosco. I'm pretty new to the smoke thing also. But I am now addicted. Your hard work and money has paid off, the back yard is really nice.
