New to me 22.5" WSM...

My local Craigslist has had a used WSM listed for about a week at $200obo. His listing stated that he thought it was an 18". I already own an 18", so I just forwarded the listing on to a couple friends when I saw it. For whatever reason, I decided to text the guy and ask him about it today. He still had it and stated that it was actually the 22.5" model... and he accepted my $125 offer. :) It has a 2009 date code. The exterior looks great, but the grates/water bowl have been neglected. Does anyone know what Weber charges for a new water bowl? Knowing that would help me decide if it's worth trying to clean this one up. And what about the grates? I'm assuming the charcoal and top grates are standard sizes that are available from Amazon or Lowe's, but the lower cooking grate will likely need to be ordered from Weber, right?

I would think that the "off the shelf" 22.5 weber grates would be the same size grate. I would measure and compare it to the ones sold a HD, Lowes & Target. Target is closing out it's summer BBQ stuff. I heard that weber grates are around $10. I heard you could order a water bowl from ace hardware and pick it up at the store.

I use a top grate, found at HD or Lowe's for my second grate, it sits on top of the bottom screws, not the shelf, and one has to slant it just a touch to get it in and out. I prefer it as it now has handles, as opposed to the lower standard grate, which is a tad smaller. I believe they are about $18 at retail stores. I don't use a water bowl at all, just a large clay pot that sits in in the water bowl slot.)))))))::::::::::::::::::::::> d

John you might want to try the 22 without the water pan or just foil the pan regardless of it's condition using it without water. The 22's take 3 gallons and that uses a lot of fuel to get them up to temp. A clay saucer foiled in the water pan might be all you need to get you going.

Sounds like you got a really good deal. Good Luck with it.

I would think you can order all these things directly from Weber or any authorized Weber dealer. As far as the water pan, I have always foiled and used 1 gallon of water, then added some water later if needed. Today I'm doing a 10.5# pork butt and using Harry Soo's suggestion of just foiling the pan and not using any water. So far temp is holding at 250* as set on my Pitmaster IQ-110 controller. Dome is reading 210*.

You can purchase the top cooking grate at any Weber dealer, hardware store, etc. It's the same as on the 22.5" kettle.

If you want the original bottom cooking grate, you'll have to order that from Weber.

The charcoal grate is not the same as the one in the kettle. It's 17" diameter in the 22.5" kettle, but 18.5" diameter in the 22.5" WSM.

Call Weber Customer Service at 800-446-1071. They can price out all three grates plus the water pan for you over the phone. Shipping is a flat $7 for Fedex ground.

Regards,
Chris
