New Kingsford lump charcoal

I just found the new kingsford lump charcoal at wal-mart this past weekend.(its in a tan color bag) i got me a bag but have not tried it yet. Has anyone used it yet and what results do you have? I am going to try mine before the week is out but not sure when yet.

Interesting I just noticed that they did a review of it over on.Naked Wiz

Surely it can't be worse than the new kingsford.
Also if you can get it @ wal-mart that would probably help some folks out.

I had not seen that review and now it scares me but i will find out for myself.

i have done 4 cooks with the new kingsford and honestly not noticed much differnet than the old, it does get hot quicker, and harder to get down to 200-225 (had to close all bottom vents for over a hour and still just got to 230), after adding the butt it dropped to 220 but as soon as you crack a vent it shoots up 20 degrees or so. i like it so far but it is different. The old is not available anywhere here in town anymore so it looks like we don't have a choice.

And yes i did get the lump at walmart, same 10 lb. bag in the review.

My kettle called me home yesterday so I had to try the new kingsford lump. Lets just say it does not work in the kettle, don't even try it. When lighting the lump in a chimney it is terrible. After about 5 minutes it starts sparking everywhere. It looked like the 4th of july at my house. To stop that mess I poured it in the kettle before i wanted to hoping to calm it down. Almost half of the chimney went right thru the charcoal grate and that prevented the lower vent from working properly. Trying to close the vent made even a bigger mess because it all falls thru to the catch pan and is still sparking everywhere. Long story short I finally shoveled it all out into my Brinkmann grille pro delexe and finally we had some good chicken to eat but I learned alot with this. It should work better in the WSM but i dont think i will even try.

For lump in the kettle, I use a second grate on top of the old grate. I turn the old grate upside down so that it's support rails face up, and place the other grate on top with the rails running crosswise. It locks itself into place.

It helps a lot in retaining the smaller pieces, as the grates form a grid. Using lump takes a little getting used to, but it's not harder to use than charcoal, just different.

Haven't tried Kingsford lump, but I don't think it's reviews were very good on Naked Whiz if I remember right.

I've been using Royal Oak, and Wicked Good without any major problems.

Thanks Craig, I had seen that trick before but just didn't think of it. Each brand has its own tricks and uses so I guess its just whatever we like.
That sparking problem on the review at Naked Whiz is very correct as I almost burned the house down. (not really) I had to move everything around it cause it throws sparks everywhere, even worse in a windy condition like i had yersterday.
I also do a lot of Dutch oven cooking and kingsford (old and new) works perfect for that.
