New door question on 22 inch wsm

Hello All -

I am new to the WSM but am not new to smoking. I appreciate all the great information housed here but have a question I have not seen addressed.

There is plenty on the loose fit of the wsm door at the top end. However, when putting my unit together I noticed I also have a gap at both bottom corners. This gap is not caused by the door being mishapen like at the top, it is simply a small gap on each side the door does not appear to cover. The gaps are roughly 1/3 of an inch long and probably a little more then 1/8 of an inch wide on each bottom corner. Is this normal? Will the cooker cover up this space with "gunk" when seasoned? Or do you think it is possible I'm either doing something wrong closing the door or maybe the door is a dud? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Pics would help to see if it's normal. But 22's seem to have the most issues with the door being off. Not sure why Weber can't fix this at the manufacturing facility. If the gaps are too big, there is no amount of seasoning that will seal them up. You can also try bending the door to shape/fit it better.

I just want to restate that what I'm seeing isn't a shape issue. The problem appears to be that in the bottom 2 corners there seem to be small gaps that I don't think any amount of reshaping would fix. Are small gaps at the bottom typical for the 22? Here is a picture of the bottom right corner. The same gap is also on the left side.

Thank-you again.

i would suggest calling Weber and asking them for a new door...
or, try pushing the door down further to seat it better.
only a thought...

My first thought. My door doesn't have that gap. If the door does have that gap (bottom or top), like Jim said, ask Weber for a new door because that gap shouldn't be there.

Ok, I see what you're talking about now. Yeah, a call to Weber Customer Service should be in order and you have a pic to send them if they want. I've had issues, which I thought would need pics and it turns out they didn't need them and sent me new parts.

The other thing I thought of looking at that pic, is that it might not be the door, but maybe the opening of the middle section. Maybe it was cut wider that it was supposed to be.

Maybe measure the door opening and see if others that have the same opening on the 22 (some have rounded tops and some are square) can measure theirs. If you're opening is coming out larger, there's your problem, not the door.

Thanks everyone. I called Weber and they are sending a new door. Jack - It never occured to me but you may be correct and the cut on the main chamber may in fact be the issue. I hope not

It actually seems like the door would cover the openings if maybe it would just push down another couple tenths of an inch. However, it just won't no matter how hard I push down.
