Hi Everyone-
I live in Bklyn, NY and getting Apple Wood here is impossible. Stores don`t even want to special order. I`ve been looking online but the price of shipping is more than the actual wood. Where do you get Apple Wood?

I also need to get a thermometer for the WSM but I`m not sure which one to get. What do you recommend?

Thanks,
EB

Check your local orchards for fruit wood, most will give you their trimmings. Otherwise check your local gourmet shops or BBQ Specialty stores.

The Maverick ET-73 Remote Smoker Thermometer is a great choice for a digital therm with alarms. For a mountable thermometer, the Tel-Tru BQ300 Analog Thermometers are another good choice.

Hi Ernest,

I'm not far from you in long island. I scored a nice cache of apple wood at my local golf course. I noticed some downed branches and asked if I could take them away. they were happy to oblige.

I also have an et73. If you want to stay simple, you can use a candy thermometer (about 5 bucks at your local supermarket) and put it through one of the top vents.

Enjoy and keep us posted!

Larry, you been drinking today? Apple orchards in Brooklyn? and "nobody wants to special order it for me". Your tanked ain't cha Bud. LOL!

Ernest. Do a search "Natures own" online. I can't link here from work or I would give you the link. You can do a search here for Natures own. I have a recent thread in the"Just Conversation" forum about them.Their shipping prices are cheap compared to others. They have great wood. My first choice when buying smoke wood online.

Well according to these links, there appears to be a few apple orchards in NY. I am not familiar with NY so I do not know their vicinity compared to Brooklyn. Just trying to provide resources to answer the post.....

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the links. When I have some time this evening, I will visit. Yes, here in Brooklyn, there are no orchards but there are several golf courses so I will see what I can do. As far as www.bbgalore.com, I checked their site this morning but the nearest one is over 300 miles away so I don`t think I`ll be visiting.
I did find apple wood just today at a fairway in Red Hook but it was a mix of apple and hickory. I have a ton of hickory for the summer season so I didn`t want anymore and I definitely don`t want the two mixed so it was useless to me.

Keep the ideas coming, I will follow through on them and report back as to what I have found just in case theres another WSM user living in Brooklyn.

FYI- Got some brisket, lamb chops and 3 racks of ribs for this weekend. Never tried smoking lamb chops... any pointers would be appreciated. I also need to redeem myself from last weekends flagship smoke of ribs.

The other day I smoked some pork shoulder (pulled pork) and it came out the best I have ever had it so my spirit is lifted. Anyways, I`ll be back at it soon enough.

Peace,
EB

New York City and New York State are like two totally different worlds, if you're not familiar with the area web search results aren't going to help much.

Added on edit: I did a little homework online and there isn't really a lot I can find out by you, I would say Bryans link would be your best bet. Anyways here's a couple places to try but definitely call first before driving out there, I get the feeling BBQ's are not a major part of their business.

Big Apple Barbeque & Fireplace
149 13 Avenue
Whitestone, NY 11357

Allboro BBQ & Fireplace Service

Wow, you guys are awesome. Thanks so much. I will definitely call these stores, they`re a lot closer than BBQ Galore!

All for the love of smoke!

Larry and Bill-

Thanks for the Tel-Tru recommendation! Love the designs and the fact that its made in the USA... biggie for me. just ordered the BQ300 (black with 4" stem).

Peace,
EB

Update:
I found apple wood, maple wood and cherry wood at Whole Foods on Long Island. I paid $7.99 each and the box is small. I`ll probably get about 18 - 20 handfuls from each box but right now, this is the cheapest option for me.

Also, I really, really want to get away from using charcoal and replace it with wood. Today I stopped into my local pizzeria where they use a brick oven. Asked one of the guys I`m friendly with where they get their wood, he responded "Staten Island". Gave me the name of the place. I told him I would like to buy some on occasion from him because I don`t need that much and he gave me 4 nice pieces today gratis!

I actually grilled some chicken and vegs this evening with it and I could definitely taste the difference. Kingsford Charcoal is not bad, its just that wood is better in my opinion.

Anyway, my wood search is over. Just wanted to give you all updates and just in case any Brooklynites are looking for wood, they know NOW where to get it. (The pizzeria is La Villa. They have three locations: Park Slope, Mill Basin and Howard Beach.)
