Re: Steel wool. I suggest you stick to some very fine #0000 or #000 steel wool. Definitely not the household stuff.
 
Are you going to stain or do anything else to them. They look good, but I would be afraid that unprotected wood will soak up a lot of grease and BBQ sauce.
 
We had a baby crib that was natural wood with a clear overcoat. It was beautiful. You could go for the natural look, but you definitely need to put something on it before you start cooking or even put it outdoors...that wood will really soak up the rain and stains and oil from your hands if you don't.
 
I decided to use this Cabot product for the wood. It is an oil blend designed for unfinished decking. It gives the raw cedar an amber hue while still looking pretty natural IMO.
