My Genesis 1000 project

Val, most of these grates are over twenty years old at this point. If I come across them and they are warped or have broken welds, I just throw them away. The messed up ones are usually on pretty messed up grills, I know it's not the grates' fault. Unless you can weld or know someone who can, I would just move on.
Thanks Steve!

So, just a thought…
The first places of surface rust (and following progression) are at points of friction and joints with heat.
That cannot be made better by the fluctuation of high temperatures around the cookbox, which is where the worst occurs?
What if we applied a thin bbq gasket to the frame surrounding the cookbox? Would not be visible…
I have leftover Big Green Egg gasket and intend to try that out to protect the frame after the hours and elbow grease I’ve invested.
My only concern is the thickness of the gasket impacting the nuts and bolts attaching the box to the frame.
I like the thought of this. I have also thought about an insulator there. My main fear is moisture retention, especially when not in use.

Great job!
Your Genesis 1000 is coming together nicely. It's always nice when the frame is in good condition and can be brought back to like new with rubbing compound and wax. I also use and prefer Meguiar's brand since my auto detailing days way back. I had to do a full frame strip and repaint on my current restoration which is nice to appreciate the transformation but a nice original paint frame restored is always a big win to me.
Those Qulimetal 9mm 304 SS grates you are considering are fantastic and in my opinion the best you can get at that price point. I have several sets and I try to buy them when they are on sale on Amazon. The lowest sale price is $79.99 at least a few times a year and as high as $110 when not on sale. Only ones I would consider better in my personal opinion would be Weber #9930s or Dave Santana's custom fab grates that replicate the #9930s but the price jump between Qulimetal 9mm and those is significant. Steve Hoch is right in liking those original stamped SS grates also. They are made from high quality SS as well.
I missed alot on this thread because I have been busy restoring one of my Genesis Jr grills and I'm just catching up now. It's nice to see more restoration threads posted on here. I'm always hoping other people will share there restoration projects. I see Steve Hoch has been helping you. You can't ask for better helps than him. You are in good hands. I'll keep an eye on your restoration progress and look forward to seeing your finished product all put together. I'm happy to help with anything if I can but it looks like you've got it covered.

Biggest issue I see with grates is people judging performance based on how well they "mark" food or what folks call "sear". It's more a matter of mass and shape than material. Except in the case of aluminum or other high conductive materials like copper. Heavy SS and cast iron can absorb and hold a lot of heat due to not being good conductors. Basically my rule is if something conducts electricity well it will not do that job of putting a crust or a mark on food because it conducts the heat and radiates it so well.
Now, of course we can get into a whole diatribe of high end copper cookware for example. But, you will never see a chef put really high end copper stuff on blasting heat. They reserve that for stainless or cast iron.

So, tonight I finished correcting surface rust on the frame, replaced (refurbished 2) the nuts and bolts holding the frame together, and started on the wheels.

Replaced the casters with 2 new Weber ones (probably spent more than it called for).

I managed to pull off the wheels as directed earlier from the axle. I also managed to clean the 8 inch wheels and remove the white wall inserts without damaging them. They are all prepped and ready for paint. Satin white as I recall and a satin black for the wheels (I’ll check those posts in the morning).
I had seen the video about restoring the axle and appreciate the reminder, as I would have used the wire wheel on my bench grinder (more tedious for sure).
Modest pics for progress. I thought the end caps turned out well.
I need to clean up the bolts for those. And the nuts are unusable, so I got some regular stainless nuts for those. I hope that’s not blasphemy😀

I didn't know there was a video for that, cool.

I always repaint the end cap bolts to match the finish on the end caps. Certainly not blasphemy to use stainless nuts instead, but I've always been able to reuse the factory ones.

These nuts you refinish? I’ll clean up the bolts for sure.
Lol, slow to catch on for a minute. Sigh, it’s late lol

Steve, your frame and endcaps turned out really nice. I may have missed it earlier but what paint did you for the frame and what paint did you use for the endcaps?

Frame was not painted, just cleaned and buffed, I believe:

Good morning! I’ve been trying to find this with the search bar, and going through the “sticky” thread for restoration...

Could you all please tell me what black paint is best to use on the wheels?
I saw somewhere that white satin Rustoleum works for the inserts.
Thank you in advance!

Also, I’m going to ask Mr Tofte for his help in getting a replacement tank level sticker and the warning sticker for the tank scale.
I really appreciate all of the help and advice! I removed the side sticker with the serial number etc on the side of the control panel and reaffixed it to the underside of the panel as it was getting pretty faded.
