My first Turkey cook on a 22.5 OTG

I bought a 14lb frozen turkey the week of thanksgiving and didn't plan on holding out onto it this long, but i cooked it today on 1-1-15. This bird was $7 (.49/lb), so even if i failed it wasn't going to be a waste of money. Never cooked a turkey before, period.

This is the recipe i used.

I will say doing some researched i was concerned about comments of the bird sitting in juice the whole time. I think it was fine, it made it juicy i must say. I also had a pan underneath it with water that i did have to top it off after the first hour.
Putting the bird in a roaster pan helped me move it around and bringing it inside.
Was concerned that the popper didn't pop, but the wife said on Cooks Kitchen they said they are a waste. I did test it at 175+ in the breast and other parts. Came out fine when i started to cut into it. Was cooking for 2.5 hours. Wish it was a little longer, but i had people waiting to eat and it was like 7:00pm.

I use the iGrill Mini here, i like it but i think i would invest in the bigger one. I tend to use it to monitor the temp of grill rather then the food itelf.

Can't see it in the pic, but did have some nice smoke ring from the apple chips i used.

Dear SRamsey,

Ironically I also have a 14 pound turkey that I received for free as a promotion from my local supermarket at Thanksgiving. I will also do mine on my OTG but I will do it more in accordance with the posted recipe from Weber grills. I have a big roasting pan and a rack for the bird to sit in when I cook it. The cavity of the turkey stuffed with onions, garlic, celery and maybe some carrots and I will put a can or two of chicken broth in the roasting pan to help make gravy at the end. I am looking forward to it but I really hope I don't mess it up. Free meat is free meat, but messed up free meat is just plain wrong!

You did a fine job with yours and I sure hope I do as well!

Regards,

Tim Murphy

Looks very tasty, first time success. I know each time I try something new on the WSM I always get a little worried on how it will turn out.
