I will be doing my first pork butts this weekend. They are boneless do you rub the slab with the rub before you tie it. So you have the spices in the center of the butt?
 
Not sure on the exact way for Mr. Brown, but I would say put the rub on all the exposed meat!

Done many a Mr Brown (always bone in) and have never tied them and yes..I rubbed them over all exposed surfaces, and any crevice I find.
They are going to be tasty!

When I do boneless, I usually tie them first. No real reason but it always works well for me. I did read once on here that someone had put rub inside before they tied it and it got a little nasty.

I tie all of my butts and then rub them. Even with the bone in, the ties help you handle it when it is done and about as firm as a jellyfish.
