So the wife and I took a trip to Memphis this weekend. Of course, the MIM championships were last weekend but we had prior obligations. Still, the trip this weekend was a blast with plenty of good food and drinks. Also, because of the trip I didn't get a chance to cook on Smoke Day, but made up for it on Monday.
We headed down Friday afternoon and got to Beale Street around 9PM. I was thirsty so we stopped into Silky O'Sullivans for a Diver (a huge bucket of alcohol...not sure what all is in it, they don't give out the recipe, but it is sweet and strong, reminded me of jungle juice I used to drink in college).
Then we went to the Pig. We weren't real hungry so we split a sampler platter of BBQ Pork Nachos, Onion Rings, and a few Jumbo Hot Wings. The food was pretty good, wish I was more hungry. Sorry, no pics of the food here.
In the morning we got up and went to Blues City Cafe. There we had a half rack of ribs, and some tamales. The ribs were good, although a tad mushy for my taste. The tamales were fantastic.
Then we ate at Dyer's, a place that deep-fries the burgers. Apparently they haven't changed out the grease since their original opening, and actually transported their grease to the Beale Street location from the original location in an armored car with police escort.
Here's a burger coming out of the grease:
I had a bunch of the Big Beers on saturday, although in this pic I am drinking a "Walk Me Down", another Memphis tradition.
The tamales at Blues City Cafe were so good I had to get some on Sunday before I left:
Here's a pic looking down Beale street before we left:
We left on Sunday afternoon, and stopped for gas in Benton Missouri at a place called Boomland. I saw a sign on the highway touting their selection of hot sauces, and when I went and looked at them, I found these at 4.99 / quart.
Memphis was a blast and can't wait to go back, hopefully next year for the MIM championships.
So after all the food and drink, I had to fire up the WSM for Monday's holiday. I did smoked then deep-fried wings:
Some Ribs:
And a butt for some pulled pork sammies:
All in all, it was a great holiday weekend!
