Meat Prices

Hi all, wasn't really sure where to ask this so here goes. Im new to smoking and I was wondering what was a fair price to pay for pork, briskit, ribs, etc...Gonna check the BJ's I am a member of. Also there is a pork center near me that sells whole hog and all the different cuts that come from a whole hog. Just wondering roughly what is reasonable per pound? Thanks all!

Joel, I get my packer briskets (Excel) from Walmart or Sam's, but the price changes, as well as whether Walmart's briskets are "Choice" like the ones at Sam's Club. Got a choice packer that showed up at our Walmart for $2.18lb last month and stuck it in the freezer to smoke sometime soon.

I get my pork butts (also Excell brand) from a local grocer that puts them on sale usually for $1.48lb. They rarely put the spares on sale but have a decent regular price of $2.49lb.

That's no higher than the Sam's Club regular price, but I snagged the three pack of spares last time there because the Sam's price was reduced to something like $2.29lb, if I recall. Noticed that the butts were still just as high as my local grocer and the briskets were up to $2.38 or so a lb. You just have to shop if you want the best deals, but I must say that the spares I got from Sam's seemed to be richer and not as lean as a lot in the past. Can't remember what brand it was, though. You can go to "butcher shops" and specialty meat places, but be aware that many are just an added middle man and are selling no fresher meat than you'd find anywhere else.

USDA choice brisket packers at king sooopers (kroger) for $1.99. Costco $2.59 I believe.

Pork butts at costco for $1.89 in the twin pack. Restaurant depot 1.59.

Spares $3.00, baby backs $4.00 per pound at any given store unless I find an exceptional sale.

enhanced pork products i.e. "moist and tender" brand are usually cheaper but I never buy them.

Joel, your local 'market' sets the prices. And by market, I refer to the competitive retail market for meat. What you pay for a whole brisket in Apex may be $2/lb less than what it runs in NY City. Prices in San Francisco do not impact prices in Round Rock TX. I'd recommend simply shopping your area and take advantage of deals as they come along. Finding out about very low prices in Georgia will only leave you with price envy.

Thank you all for the replies...I will definately shop around. The ribs I bought at my local Lowe's Foods were about 16 bucks for roughly 2lbs. That seemed kinda high but I guess I neglected to consider different markets around the country...Got the day off tomorrow!! Gonna definately check around.

I stopped in a local specialty grocery store in my area just for fun. They had BB for $8.99/lb. Choice ribeyes were 15.99 and prime NYS was 22.99.

God love Costco.

I am always drawn to the specialty store in my neighborhood and fell for the 9.99 /lb babybacks … just to see I got some one time… they looked great, trimmed perfect..this place sells only niman ranch meat which is supposed to be high quality.. yeah they were good really good, but for ribs you can get just as good for half that..I mean ribeyes were that much (ribeyes are better than a strip anyday imo!).

I may use them for a piece of belly when I get around to trying my own bacon though…

I wish I had some of your prices.

I pay between $2.50 - $2.99 lb. for brisket. This is choice CAB from my local meat market. They have best price and great meat.

I pay about the same for spares as I do for brisket.

From $1.89 - $2.19 lb. for butt.

I don’t buy BBs, so I don’t know.
