Today I called Maverick Tech Support about my new Redi-Check ET-72 (single probe wireless). It was working intermittently, sometimes losing signal or locking up. I can reinitialize and it would work OK for a while, then stop working again. Using it with the probe stuck through a potato on the top grate for cooking temp.
The Maverick tech asked what I was using it for, then said "Yeah, we get a lot of calls from you smoker guys." He said the design is such that, if the temperature doesn't change for 10 minutes, the transmitter goes into sleep mode and stops transmitting. He said they have passed this issue on to their engineering dept., but currently there is no fix except to reinitialize the unit at the transmitter. The unit is designed to be used where the temp measured continues to change, apparently.
This explaination seems plausible, given my experience with the unit and the temp stability of the WSM. Anyone else experience this with their wireless unit? It's great otherwise, but not useful as a cooking temp readout in the WSM given this design limitation.
