Just ordered my Maverick ET-732...(early christmas present from the In-Laws) quick question... i have no mods to my wsm 18... planning on running the wires between lid and mid section (i asked the question before about crimping of the wires and shorting out and it seemed that there were no major problems with it)..

.how and where do yinz guys place the probe that monitors the grate temp???...

read about a piercing thru a potato near the edge cuz the edges of the grate burn hotter...
or.... fixation to the grate with ????....

got free 2 day shipping so should have it by wednesday... may try my first unmonitored overnight cook
Saturday into sunday...

My sons 5th BDAY party is sunday and will have about 40 or so people... may surprise them with some pulled pork N'AT....

GO STILLERZ!!!

Kurt, some of the members are cutting a slot in the top of the mid section so the lid will sit tight. All you do then is lift the lid and the wires. Others like me have adapted various lamp rod techniques sometimes drilling into the mid section or removing one of the grill strap nuts and bolts, enlarging that and inserting the probes that way. It's a matter of preference. I have the lamp rod incorporated into a handle in the mid section but I like the idea of the slot too.

It should come with a clip with a hole for the probe to slide in. That hooks in the grate wherever you choose to locate it, I don't bother as I monitor at the top vent.
Happy B-day to the Son and good luck!

Tim

I ended up doing a pseudo lamp post mod. Works well. Keep it foiled over when on use with probes.

Here's what I did:
