Maverick ET-73 vs. Nu Temp NU-701

Just placed an order today (from the links on this site) for Amazon to send me the Maverick. Now I just need to smoke a Goose and I've got my very own cheesy 80's action/chick flick.

I use the Maverick ET-73 and it performs very well. Their customer service is excellent. I recently burned out the fire temp probe wire (entirely my fault) and they quickly sent me a replacement at a very reasonable cost of $12 which included the shipping.

After spending last Friday into Saturday on overnight watch...I'm definitely putting the Maverick on my B'Day list. Pork was great...but the next day was a fog.

Reinknecht, I'm feeling your pain at this very moment. First overnight BBQ and first pork butt. ET-73 is in the amazon shopping cart and will be ordered soon. Off to check the butt right now - at 11 hours I'm thinking it is time to wrap and rest. Will double check temps with insta read before removing.

Used my new Maverick last night on an over night cook and it was great. I love the high/low temp settings and the alarm that goes with those settings was nice as I did not have to set the alarm clock by the bed. Most sleep I've ever had on an all nighter.

I have both and they are both 2-3 years old. I cannot speak to the current design.

My house seems to have serious interference problems. None of the thermometers works beyond about 20-25'. The Nu-temps are what I use because of the PITA reconnecting the ET-73 when it looses connection.

Since I am not where the thermometers are, the following is from memory: With respect to the switch being behind the ET-73's door, this is to put the switch behind the weatherproof barrier. Be sure that you put the gasket back into its proper position when closing the battery door. The suggestion to drill a hole for a toothpick would breach this barrier and allow weather to get into the electronics.

Since I managed to toast two of the three Nu-Temp transmitters (yep, they were sitting on the Genesis shelf, too close to the fire box, while I was burning off the WSM grates; amazing what lots of heat does to thermoplastic and LCD displays) I probably will buy more of them.
