Maverick ET-73 - Terrible Range

I purchased one of these after reading all the great things about them on here. The one I received from Amazon will not update if you get more than about 15 feet away from the transmitter. I can go into my sliding glass door about 20 feet from the smoker, and it completely stops updating. I am sending it back to Amazon on Monday.

Are there any other options? Is the Oregon Scientific any better?

Yeah, it does seem off.

I know my reception would fall off greatly once inside but no troubles anywhere in the backyard with a clear line-of-sight.

Mine only has about a 30 ft range but since I can sleep in my Lazy Boy and watch the cooker and the maverick I kept mine ! Be a LOT better with more range thou I agree !

Yeah...that seems off. I can carry mine anywhere in my two-story wood-frame house, and even to spots in the front yard, with the cooker on the back patio, and get the updates. I certainly have no problem with the receiver inside in the family room (in the back of the house) and the cooker on the patio.

Have u put in some quality battery´s?

Might help with the signal(those u get with it isnt very good)

Just a thought

Bless

there's a receiver mod here where you open it up & solder a piece of wire to extend the antenna. I haven't done it, all I use anymore is a thermometer I drilled into the dome.

Keep in mind that it only updates once every minute or so. I haven't measured the exact time. The light on the transmitter flashes, and the little parabolic reflector antenna icon on the receiver momentarily flashes. I think it updates a little faster when the temperature is changing rapidly.

(On the down side, if you actually lose signal, it takes nearly 40 minutes before the receiver gives up and displays nothing - I wish they'd change that time-out delay.)

The moment I found that the on/off switch was hidden inside the battery compartment I knew the system was designed badly.
Yeah, the range sucks but I still use it.

George, I believe the unit that is outside exposed to the elements has the protected switch

There seems to be a LOT a weirdness in these mine updates every 20 seconds goofy i know but I timed it ! And if it loses the signal takes about a minute to pick it back up if its back in range !strange device me thinks there is a lot a diffrent programs at diffrent production times. but at the prsent time its the only real show in town unless someone knows of a LOT better one ?

I wouldn't buy a automatic temp controller but I do like to know my meat temps and cooker temps .

The Maverick-73 has a love-hate reputation. I hated mine, even after sending the unit back to Maverick for repair. I also changed the Chinese batteries for domestic, added the aerial with no change of results. It simply did not live up to its hype.
The other day I was pushing the basket thru Walley World for Shewhomustbeobeyed and noticed a remote in thier BBQ section but didn't have a chance to look at it. Has anyone used a Walley World remote?

Nope, I saw that one and also a different one in Home Depot. I purchased the Maverick given all the praise on here. Range seems to be about 30 feet on mine which is okay from the bedroom. Works great to monitor overnight cooks but not so great from my living room or kitchen which are a little farther away. I might try the mod and see what happens. Really just need a few more feet out of it.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>Yes, I realize that. But a protected switch mounted on the exterior (even at additional cost) would have been a lot more practical, IMO.
