Where do you mount the transmitter? Do you have any problems associated with hanging it off of the WSM lid? Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have a spring loaded work clamp (Home Depot) that I attach to one side of the lid handle. I then hang the transmitter on that. Then my wires go straight down through the top vent. The clamp keeps the transmitter far enough away from the heat and smoke.

Ive mounted handels on the side of my WSM and just hang it from that. If you use or have a table I would set it near the smoker and just put the thermometer on that. I dont know how close that c clamp is to the lid. since more heat comes of the lid (upword) you have to be carefull. I think it was Randy (GAL) fried his transmiter becouse it was to close to the lid. It can also be a pain when opening the lid as well.
Just my 2 cents

Sorry Rob
I didnt read your post properly (or it didnt sink in ) I get it know! Its a safe distance.

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll just try putting it on a table next to the WSM. Unless I come up with some other way that is easy & trouble free.

Here are a couple of pictures. I've just recently started this BBQ page, so it's still in a rough draft. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I added the mounting pics at the bottom. It's nothing fancy, but it works for me. I just put the clamp on the opposite side of the handle that the smoke is blowing towards. It's not too hot, and the wires drop straight down through the vent. The smoker probe just hangs, and I insert the food probe. There's enough play in the wire to lift the lid up high enough to either insert or remove the food probe, depending on if you're removing or replacing the lid.

Towards the top of the page you'll see the ET-73 on the clamp, on the chimney, which is on a block. I had to run the wires either under the lid or up through the vent on this set up, and didn't like it too much.

Not sure if other folks have tried this and not liked it.

My ET-73 came with a small wire clip to hang it from something. I hang that right in the lip of the middle section where you place the lid. Then, I firmly place the lid on the smoker. The wire clip is thin enough to fit between the lid and the side of the middle section. Note, this is not UNDER the lid, it is BESIDE the lid.

When put in this way, it keeps the transmitter sticking out away from the middle section and requires no modifications for mounting. The only hiccup is if you take off the lid. What i do then is make sure both leads are pointed in towards the middle section. This holds the transmitter plastic off the hot metal.

That wire clip is supposed to be inserted between two grate wires. The probe then inserts, and rests about 1/2" above the grate, to give you accurate temp. of the grate.

I use it to hang it off one of my handels.

Yeah, what Jim said - one clip for the probe, a wire one for the transmitter. I believe we're talking transmitter here.

I would worry that it may get too hot being that close to the middle section. But even if it were OK heat-wise (which it sounds like it is), I like to keep mine up higher and unobstructed for transmission reasons. I need as far of a range as I can.

Bottom line, do what works for you. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
