Matching new wood planks to original handle?

Got the new redwood slats (left), and they’re *so* close to the original (right). I wonder if sanding will knock off most of that extra thickness?

Yep. If they do stick up slightly above the Z bars, I would consider that a benefit. That way if you set stuff on them, it will rest on the wood and not the Z bars which could nick them and invite rust.
I would love to source a bunch of that redwood stock.

If you have a table saw or router table you could do a series of shallow cuts ( Edge Rabbet) on each side where it sits on the z bars.

So I applied a coat of boiled linseed oil to my sanded redwood slats, and love how they look!



However, I'm not sure how many coats I should apply? Google searches say anywhere from 3 to 20 (!) with 24 hrs between each coat.

Anyone have an input?

I would definitely stay on the lower end of that range.....sheesh, 20 coats?

Did you sand off the extra thickness or just leave it as another suggested? I have the “plastic wood” but wood switch if it’s straight forward.

I sanded the planks, but just for smoothness. I didn't really attempt to sand any extra off to reduce thickness. It turned out well.
