Matching new wood planks to original handle?


 
Got the new redwood slats (left), and they’re *so* close to the original (right). I wonder if sanding will knock off most of that extra thickness?

Yep. If they do stick up slightly above the Z bars, I would consider that a benefit. That way if you set stuff on them, it will rest on the wood and not the Z bars which could nick them and invite rust.
I would love to source a bunch of that redwood stock.
 
So I applied a coat of boiled linseed oil to my sanded redwood slats, and love how they look!

However, I'm not sure how many coats I should apply? Google searches say anywhere from 3 to 20 (!) with 24 hrs between each coat.

Anyone have an input?
