Lump longevity vs Briquettes

Lately, I've started buying some of the 8.8 lb bags of Cowboy brand lump that they sell at Home Depot or Lowes - The bags are roughly the same size in volume as a 20 lb bag of Kingsford - but they only contain 8.8 lbs of product.

I haven't measured it much, but it seems that I get about the same amount of burn time out of the lump as I do out of the Kingsford - maybe slightly less - but it seems that the comparisson of volume between the two is more relevant to the burn time than the measure of weight...

Any thoughts, or am I just crazy? I usually will mix in briquettes and lump, and I use a stoker to control things in my smoker.

I am not a Cowboy fan. I like lumps that are denser. They burn longer than lighter lumps and, in my experience, longer than Kingsford.

Most here say that Cowboy is not quality lump to say the least. Some have stronger words to describe it. I've never used it so I don't have first hand knowledge, but if it is as bad as some say, try another brand for your comparisons. If you search here under "Cowboy" you will see what I mean. I've been getting lump on line from Wicked Good Charcoal and Nature's Own. I think they both are very good lumps.

Ryan, I stopped using Cowboy when I found some hardwood flooring in it and read many negative comments about it.

I'm just using K bricks until I find something around here I like.

I like using lump. But I would use almost any
kind of briquettes than use Cowboy lump. Try
to find some other brands of lump near you.

Cowboy is one of the lowest quality lump brands out there.

Why the big box stores insist in pushing that crap is really a disservice to it's customers.

You might be able to find Humphrey's in your area. Give them a call at (814) 849-2302

Ryan - I'm with the other guys in regards to the opinion on Cowboy. BTW if you visit a Fresh Fields store you will see Cowboy Lump labeled as their "360" brand, so be careful.

I used Cowboy once when my Humphrey's ran out. Didn't like it. Too much flooring and trim scraps, burned real fast, etc. Better, high quality lump in my experience will be about 18 lbs. or so in a bag the size you are using as an example above.
