Lump Coal

I have read a number of comments about the use of lump coal instead of charcoal briquettes. Most have negative comments about Cowboy brand. Is there a brand that will do a good job?

Royal Oak - only problem...you gotta go to WalMart to get it

Unless you're willing to spend money on shipping, you just have to try whatever you can find locally.

Check out True Value Hardware stores, Gordon Food Service, Wal-Mart, places that sell high end BBQ's like a Big Green Egg.

Some of the fun is in the search!

Chuck, I really like Wicked Good lump charcoal, but it's not sold everywhere. Closest supply to you is probably these folks: http://www.hawgeyesbbq.com/ and that's a long drive!

Fire King is another one I heard good things about when I got started with my WSM, and I think it's easier to get than WGC.

I'll be trying Ozark Oak lump for my next WSM cook.

I swear by Royal Oak lump.

Find a brand you like, and stick with it. When you know how your charcoal behaves, you will be a much better cook.

Lump needs two major qualities -- it must burn well, hot, long and cleanly and it must be rationally priced. Royal Oak meets both of these.

I've tried Kroger Lump (their brand, they also sell other lump "stuff") and found it to be similar, but came away preferring RO.
