Lump coal vs hardwood

I use lump coal in my WSM 22.5". Can I use hardwood? The owners manual says to use briquettes which makes no sense for smoking

What do you mean by using hardwood? Hardwood lump charcoal??? You can certainly use lump charcoal in the WSM. You can also use briquettes. Both are used in abundance by people on this forum. Not sure why using briquettes makes no sense to you, but if you prefer to use lump, you can with no problems.

If by using hardwood, you mean using wood - like a log burner does, no, you cannot do that in a WSM. If you really like to work, you can start a fire and produce coals that you could shovel in your WSM but I don't know why anyone would want to do that.

There are a few things in the manual which can be taken "differently" Once you're WSM is assembled take the manual and use it to light you're fuel of choice in the chimney.
Like Jerry pointed out. The WSM is not designed to burn hardwood like a stick burner.
If you use lump already, why go thru the hassle of taking HW and changing that into lump.
Unless if ya got a barrel, and a bunch of free hardwood, and some time on you're hands, then go for it Sir!
And Welcome to the Board!:wsm:
