Lump Charcoal

I live in SD, Ca. and I was wondering what is the best (long burn, easy light, low ash, not too expensive) lump charcoal in this area. Home Depot, Walmart, Lowes, Etc. I've been using Kingsford and I just want to give Lump a try to see if it is worth it. I've looked on nakedwhiz.com and I can't make heads or tails out of their rankings, plus I don't even know what I can find here in SD. Thoughts? Advise?

It (Cowboy) is inclined to have charcoal made out of OSB and Plywood and various types of other building scraps. While still technically charcoal, I doubt as do most others that the glue and adhesives impart a very good (if not even unsafe) flavor to the meat.
I have had wonderful success with Humphreys. I think it's mostly available across the country albeit in specialty shops and not your big box stores. You can ask them where it is found locally (that's what I did) at this link:
Linky Poo

Chris, where do you get your Humphrey's at? I've been looking all over up here and cannot find any. Must not know where to look. Any info that you could share will be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

Humphrey's is out near Pittsburg PA. Last time I talked to them (last year) they sold as far North as NY, and as far south as NC.If you can get it, it's every bit as good as the Wicked Good lump. Been using Hump Lump now for 4+ years. As long as I can keep getting it here, I won't buy anything else. Well cept for that Maple Leaf Lump from up North. Best lump I ever used.

Yup, Hump Lump is the best, but it's a Right Coast brand and the truck ride to the Left Coast is probably cost-prohibitive, doubt you'll find it.

Royal Oak is very good and probably available in your area (somewhere like WalMart?).

Cowboy ain't great, but it is lump. I don't think they use adhesives, just untreated flooring/molding scrap. It's pretty sparky, keep an eye on it when the Santa Ana's are blowing (or you may be on the evening news).

Hump user for about 6 years or so myself. .Specialty stores will be priced higher, but no more so than other quality lump. Contact them and find out where they distribute in your area. I buy mine at a feed and grain store. Bryan gets his at a fuel/coal/farm supply. At places like that (distributors) you can get it very reasonable. Last time I picked up for about $11 for 20lb bag. In the specialty stores it's about $20.

The very first time I bought it on my way out to Western PA and stopped at the actual company. They only sold in pallets there, but went into town and picked it up at the local grocery store for $7 20lb bag! Back seat of my car and the trunk were packed to the gills. Locals at the grocery store were looking at me funny

Andrew,
Up north here in Sacramento lump is getting very hard to find. My 3 closest Wal-Marts are not carrying Royal Oak at this time and as you have read Cowboy is not a good choice. I have begun using Lazarri and am quite pleased with it. I can find it easily at my local OSH and its headquarted only a couple of hours drive away in San Francisco. They also sell 40 lb bags of Hickory or Mesquite wood chunks so I am planning a drive there soon to stock up. I realize an 8-9 hour drive is out of the question for you but I would give the lump a try. You have OSH stores in SoCal right?
