I have a WSM... but I'm looking for recommendations for a smoker/grill with a side mount box... I see the Silver Smoker at HD... please recommend other options!

My first smoker was a New Braunfels Hondo deluxe which was very well built for around $230. No mods or nothing. It is 5 years old and a buddy still uses it. Theres a big jump in quality from 200-500 so, again depends on what your planning to spend. A 200 can turn out same quality as Q as a more expensive model but, may require more work on the fire management side, may not hold heat as well, size, thickness, longevity many many factors.

I have two Char-Broil Silver offset cookers and they work perfectly. I can smoke all day long at 225*. For about $160.00, it's a decent inexpensive smoker. Just my two cents.

I have a chargriller with the side firebox.

It's really a nice pit, works well for the price....but it absolutely does not compare to the wsm for cooking smoked meats.

It is very expensive and time consuming to do long cooks on.

I use it as a grill now.

I've got a Silver smoker as well... I use it as storage for my cooking utensils so I never have to go far to find them when using my WSM. It works wonders!!

WSM's of coarse are great, but if one gets bored easily and wants to tend the fire etc...offsets are great. Definetly a lot more challenging and rewarding. Its best to have one of each smoker, depending on your mood. Sometimes one doesnt have all day to play w/ fire though.

i have a bar-b-chef.its ok.it takes FOREVER to get to temp and burns a lot of fuel, even with the charcoal basket.honestly id stick with the wsm.now that i have that i use the bar-b-chef less and less.

have a Chargriller with a side fire box. Will still use it. It is fun and a challenge to maintain the fire. Also works great as a grill alot of cooking surface.

Reviving an old thread here... was exactly what I was looking for. Here's my situation. I love the WSM, but find myself with over rick of seasoned hickory, a rick or more of apple with access to more, some cherry, and just stacked a bunch of mulberry that will be ready in a year or two if I get the energy to split some.

So I found this thread considering the same. Just figuring with so much free and ideal fuel, would be nice to have the option to have something that could burn the wood for fuel. I've seen the char-broil models and often thought they would suit this need. I probably would not make the jump to the $500 range unless it was truly an amazingly different product.
