Little Bit of Rust

So let me start off by saying that I have the best wife ever and she bought me the 22" WSM for Christmas! I smoked a ham for Christmas and noticed that after the cook there appeared to be a little bit of rust on the inside of the smoker. Is this really rust of if so, why? I need to look at it in more detail again tomorrow when it's lighter out but wondering what's going on. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks Kevin, I figured it wasn't rust but didn't know what else it could be. Do I just leave the smoke particles & moisture or do I wipe it off? If I remove, do I use steel wool or just wipe it down. Thanks again.

You can either rinse it off or wait till it dries and brush it off. Some do this quite often. I only do it every so often, when it becomes flaky.

The stuff on the inside of the lid might fall on the food and if you can knock it off with a paper towel now and again that's probably a good idea. The stuff on the sides, I don't know, it'll basically just end up being a solid black layer you can probably ignore, but if you think it might become a problem feel free to keep an eye on it.

The stuff is basically carbon, it's not dangerous if you ingest some but does have a unpleasant look & texture if falls on food.
Brush it off with I wire brush when it build up.
