lid sticking

ok, not a totally new owner but this is something that could help those who are. I am about 15 cooks in, and the only parts I clean after a cook are the grates and the water pan.

on my last cook I noticed the lid sticking to the middle section, and when the seal broke it would pull ash up from the bottom and land it on the 17 lbs of butt I had going. I cruised around the forums and saw some threads where people suggest wiping it after every cook to avoid this.

I've wiped what I could off and it is still sticking a bit (when cold, have not run it since). My question is what can I use to get that gunk off? I don't want to clean the whole inside or anything just the area the lid sits on. Also a bit wary of putting chemicals on it...

thanks in advance!

I'd say wipe it down immediately following a cook (when everything is soft and gooey). I'd use a thick washcloth and really hot water.

I also do not like to use chemicals around my food. I use white vinegar and paper towel. It works best if the unit is warm. It may take a bit of paper towel and the paper towels might need to be soaked with the vinegar, but it comes off pretty easy. Sounds like you have it clean enough now that a little warm at the beginning of the cook and a wipe and you'll be all set.

thanks guys. haven't had a chance to fire it back up... kids schedules are crazy. I'll it a whirl with hot water and if that doesn't work i'll switch to some vinegar and report back!

Heres my 2c.
Chemicals-you have a point there, I have used stuff on the outside of smoker before with no problems at all. Inside I use vinegar if needed or
just a razor blade.
If u install Nomex gasket where the lid goes and twist the lid now and then it should stop the sticking problem and it would
stop any smoke leaks in that area.
I use Nomex and it works super good for me. No twisting on big smoker due to lid hinge and no sticking at all.
Hope this helps.

thanks guys. used some vinegar, a paper towel and a finger nail. it seemed to do the trick.

i'll be wiping it after each cook from now on.
