Yes. From everything I've read on this forum, the briquets will not burn quite as hot as lump, allowing for a longer smoking time because of the slightly lower temperature.

I have only used Kingsford, and it works very well when using the Minion method of cooking.
 
As you can see in Chris' minion writeup, he uses briquets. Your temperature has a lot to do with your management of the vents, the air-tightness (is that a word?) of your smoker, and the number of lit briquets that you add in the beginning. Similiar temp results can be experienced with lump or briquets.
 
Well I use nothing but Lump on most my cooks, and use the MM for nearly every cook. So yes, lump and the MM works qutie well. No King for me except for lighting my coal stove in the winter.
