Kingsford hickory

I tried the Kingsford with Mesquite many years ago and IMO it's a waste of money. It really didn't add any mesquite flavor to the meat. Better off using chunks or chips. They charge you $2 more per bag and it's less lbs of charcaol 17 lbs verses 18 lbs. Saw it at Wal Mart last night. $8.97 per bag verses $6.97 for reg Kingsford. HTH

Thank you Bryan. Being a serious greenhorn that I am at smoking, I needed a right or wrong way to go. I just got my WSM yesterday and I'm starting to plan for my first smoke. I'm going out tomorrow to get the chunks or chips and the meat. Just needed A idea what to look for. Thanks again

Kingsford adds Hickory or Mesquite to the charcoal? Both hickory and mesquite wood are easy to find (HD, Walmart, etc) and if you add your own YOU control how much you use.

If K added orange, apricot or grapefruit, that might be interesting

Chunks will do a better job in the WSM.

I went to walmart today to get a back of RO briquettes and saw the kingsford hickory on clearance for $5, 17 lb bag so I bought a couple of them. Didn't really care whether i get much hickory or not, but they don't sell RO Briq at walmart and I needed something, couldn't beat the price.

reg kingford was up to $9/bag now and the RO lump was $6.37 for 10lbs. Last time i was there, the lump was $5.27

these are easy to find around here, out of the two I would get hickory myself. I thought there could have been a bit more wood in them. I was actually thinking that they might be good in a smoker vs. the grill, but appearantly not from what I read above. But I thought they were fine esp. if you can get them at a lower price.

I've seen both hickory and mesquite K and I've never bought any. I guess it makes me nervous to not have control over how much wood is in there. Sure, it may not make that big of a difference, but I do like having control of how much smoke is used.

I have tried the hickory version and really didn't notice a big difference in the smell of the burning charcoal or the taste of the cooked food.
