Just ordered a WSM 18.5"

And now I wait . Ordered it from Aimtofind.com at the best price I could find from a vendor that is recommended on this site . Also comes with a cover . I have finally entered the world of charcoal . Always been a gas guy and figured it's time to expand my horizons . Briquettes or Lump charcoal ? Does it make any difference ?

Rolf, congratulations on your new WSM purchase and welcome to TVWBB.

Just a reminder to members that purchasing a WSM at Amazon.com using the link on the homepage is one of the most powerful ways you can help provide financial support to keep TVWBB running. Buying from Aimtofind or anywhere else does not help TVWBB. Yes, it's more money, but a good portion of that difference actually goes to TVWBB.

Thanks for your consideration,
Chris

Congrats Rolf!

I prefer using lump in my WSM. I use Royal Oak Lump (made in the US not any other kind). If you can't find Royal Oak lump where you are which I think you should, check out www.nakedwiz.com for lump charcoal ratings.

If you want to use briquettes, I recommend Stubbs over anything else. Stubbs can be found at Lowes. It doesn't have the chemical smell the Kingsford Blue has when you light it and they have changed K blue also people. It doesn't seem to get as hot as it used to and it produces ENTIRELY to much ash! You'll get ash with Stubbs but not as much as with K. Lump however, produces virtually NO ash! Easy clean up!

Hope this helps you out.

Congrats Rolf! And a big Welcome

Rolf, everyone has their preferred charcoal. For convenience, I use Stubbs briquettes which is available at most Lowe's Stores for about $8.00 a 15 lb. bag. If you are running low, it's easy to run down and get some. I have never tried Cowboy's charcoal but would love to hear from any that have. I is also available at most/some Lowe's Stores. Kingsford has been around for a long time, but the "rumors" I hear are they use some fillers that are not as good as some of the others. I'd just experiment and see if you can tell any difference. I hope to hear from some others on this, as I'm open to trying a different charcoal.

Thanks for the tip Chris, I was not aware of this fact. I appreciate it, and this forum.

George if you can avoid Cowboy, avoid it. They are 8.8lbs a bag and probably 2lbs of it are tying bits/dust. A ton of cracking and sparking to. Use Royal Oak lump (made is US bag only!) if possible. Also check out www.nakedwiz.com for other lump charcoal reviews I don't know what you can find down in Texas. A lot of people on here love Wicked Good Weekend Warrior lump also but I can't get it hear and it's apparently quite expensive.

Congrats Rolf!!!

Everyone has their own opinion of what charcoal to use. I use Trader Joe's (I think it's rebranded Rancher) for the OTS and KBlue for the WSM. I find the KBlue to be consistent with temps and if it's good enough for Weber to use in their R&D, then it's good enough for me. There is no funny taste that you may hear about and it's readily available anywhere. And right now, with the sale at HD, you cannot go wrong.

I picked up the sale bricks at the Depot while also getting some roofing matierial for my garage . It's where I do most of my grilling and soon will smoke in there also . Thanks for all the advice . My WSM is scheduled to be here tomorrow via Fedex . Woo Hoo !

Stubbs for briquets. Royal Oak has a very good lump for a decent price. Wicked Good lives up to its name and I'll be trying Nature's Own Basque in a few weeks.
