I've used these before with great success when grilling direct or wrapping in foil and smoking. Occasionally, you can find whiskey barrel staves (the sides of the barrel), which work really well.
Char-broil seems to be mass marketing "whiskey barrel chips." Look for those as there's no such thing as bad whiskey.
Other this to look for (all oak):
Tobasco wood chips and wine barrel chips or staves.
