Jack Daniels Oak Chips

Any opinions on these? I am out on the East coast, and have never seen them out with I live. It is worth sending a back back home to myself?

I like Oak...a nice mild wood to use. I have bought a couple bags of the JD, and think they work just fine. I place them in a chunk of foil and seal up...then punch holes in the foil...using a toothpick. No need to soak in water before using.

yep, i like the stuff for short cooks. just plain smells good so might put it on just as a "perfume" !

I've used these before with great success when grilling direct or wrapping in foil and smoking. Occasionally, you can find whiskey barrel staves (the sides of the barrel), which work really well.

Char-broil seems to be mass marketing "whiskey barrel chips." Look for those as there's no such thing as bad whiskey.

Other this to look for (all oak):

Tobasco wood chips and wine barrel chips or staves.

I have used the tabasco chips but I get no flavor other than that of the oak in my opinion. As the name brands brings a premium price I say just buy oak if it is available.

Now Jack Daniels pellets on the other hand have a very distinct flavor, sweet. I love the pellets.

I think that the Jack Daniels chips smell really good. I also think that they do add a different flavor than just oak chips but I am pretty sensitive to an alcohol flavor because I haven't had any alcohol in 10 months. If I drank like I normally do, then I don't taste the extra flavor. If you are willing to give up drinking for 10 months then it will be worth the extra cost. I think the chips are mostly a marketing ploy. I agree with Jeff and would just buy regular oak.

they are pretty good, but i only buy them when wally world throws them on clearance at the end of the season. i got 5 bags@1.25 per bag last year.

also i just grilled a strip streak with some mixed in and twas very good. did the steak indirect for about 7 minutes in the smoke then seared over high heat for 2 minutes per side. perfect
